DIARIO DE ARTISTA: XV BIENAL IBERO PUEBLA ARTE CONTEMPORÁNEO (ES/EN)

El 24 de octubre fue la ceremonia de inauguración de la XV bienal Ibero Puebla Arte Contemporáneo. La notificación de la selección había llegado a mi correo en julio y en agosto fui a dejar mi obra a las instalaciones de esa universidad. 

Ser seleccionado se siente bien, es un reconocimiento a tu trabajo y, sobre todo, a tu visión artística; que exista un premio monetario de por medio también motiva, pero no es lo principal por la simple y sencilla razón de que las probabilidades de ganar no están a tu favor. Aún así, de 516 artistas que postularon, yo quedé en los 45 finalistas, un triunfo en sí mismo. Nada mal.

Quienes me conocen saben que las inauguraciones no son lo más importante para mí, lo que me gusta es el proceso de producción, los descubrimientos, los errores y las sorpresas; esas cosas que sólo se develan con la creatividad aplicada a la producción de un proyecto. No obstante, siempre que puedo asisto porque es parte del trabajo y lo tomo como tal, es algo que he aprendido con los años: los artistas además de producir obras de arte, también la presentamos y hablamos de ella a quién necesite una guía o quiera saber más de esta. Es todo.

Mi padre de espaldas viendo mi obra

El lugar donde se montó la exposición, la galería de la librería Pedro J. Arrupe, me gustó bastante, un espacio abierto y circular, que me permitió recorrer toda la bienal en una sola dirección. Es la primera vez que experimenté una expo de esa manera, un cambio a las realizadas en espacios más convencionales.

Si bien nunca he resultado ganador de ninguna bienal o concurso en el que haya participado como artista, ha partir de 2022 -año que es importante para mí porque fue cuando decidí ser el artista que soy ahora- he sido seleccionado para dos bienales nacionales y un concurso internacional, he ganado una beca de producción, dos residencias y más exposiciones que en los ocho primeros años de mi carrera, además mi obra ha sido vendida en México y el extranjero. Esto podrá parecer mucho o poco, dependiendo a quién le preguntes, pero no estoy rebatiendo el cuánto, sino el cómo.

Aún quiero hacer más cosas, en lo profesional y en lo personal, así que seguiré trabajando haciendo el arte que quiero hacer y el que me ha dado más satisfacciones.

ARTIST'S DIARY: 15TH BIENAL IBERO PUEBLA OF CONTEMPORARY ART

Some speech

The opening ceremony of the 15th Ibero-Puebla Contemporary Art Biennial was on October 24th. The selection notification had arrived in my email in July, and in August I went to drop off my work at the university.

Being selected feels good; it's recognition of your work and, above all, your artistic vision. The fact that there's a monetary prize involved is also motivating, but it's not the main thing for the simple reason that the odds of winning aren't in your favor. Even so, out of 516 artists who applied, I was among the 45 finalists, a triumph in itself. Not bad.

Those who know me know that openings aren't the most important thing for me; what I love is the production process, the discoveries, the mistakes, and the surprises; those things that are only revealed with creativity applied to the production of a project. However, I attend whenever I can because it's part of the job, and I take it as such. It's something I've learned over the years: artists, in addition to producing works of art, also present them and talk about them to anyone who needs a guide or wants to know more. That's everything.

I quite liked the venue where the exhibition was set up, the Pedro J. Arrupe bookstore gallery. It was an open, circular space that allowed me to walk through the entire biennial in a single direction. It was the first time I've experienced an exhibition like this, a departure from those held in more conventional spaces.

Although I have never won any biennial or competition I've participated in as an artist, as of 2022—a year that is important to me because it was when I decided to be the artist I am today—I have been selected for two national biennials and one international competition, won a production grant, two residencies, and had more exhibitions than in the first eight years of my career. My work has also been sold in Mexico and abroad. This may seem like a lot or a little, depending on who you ask, but I'm not arguing about how much, but rather how it was achieved.

I still want to do more, both professionally and personally, so I will continue working on the art I want to make and the one that has given me the most satisfaction.
