DESARROLLO DE PROYECTO: EXTENSIONES Y EXPANSIONES 2 (ES/EN)

Del cuatro al nueve de agosto estuve en Oaxaca impartiendo un taller en Pimpollo, un centro comunitario ubicado en las afueras de la ciudad, por parte del proyecto cultural Pocoapoco del cual tuve el gusto de ser parte de su residencia en 2023. también aproveché mi estancia para continuar con mi proyecto de los polípticos que he venido desarrollando desde hace algunos meses.

Antes del viaje ya casi había terminado una obra, pero necesitaba terminar otra que me la iba a llevar para que fuera enmarcada en Oaxaca. Mi intención era postularla para una convocatoria que me interesaba donde creía que mi trabajo podía ser seleccionado.

El resultado fue un tour de forcé en el que pinte diez pinturas en cinco días, cuando el año pasado, utilizando el mismo tamaño de bastidor, pintaba una por día (aclaración, estoy hablando de tiempo de ejecución, no de preproducción y desarrollo). Al final terminé mentalmente extenuado por la presión y todos los preparativos relativos al viaje. A veces hay que saber sufrir, aunque tengo que decir que esas condiciones pudieron haber sido diferentes si hubiera gestionado mi tiempo de trabajo de mejor manera, ya que antes de viajar a Mérida tuve suficiente para comenzar con ese trabajo, pero no lo hice. Ni modo.

Políptico negro, prácticamente terminado

En fin, el domingo tres de agosto viajé y llegué al día siguiente a Oaxaca. Fue una semana muy ocupada, Martes y jueves fueron días en los que impartí el taller a dos grupos de niños sobre su historia de vida, para ello tenían que decorar una caja de cartón con cosas alusivas a sus gustos y aficiones. En general el proyecto salió bien, me dejó una experiencia sobre lo complejo que es trabajar con niños. Además de los días mencionados, el viernes hubo una ceremonia de clausura donde mostramos los resultados de los talleres nos dieron un reconocimiento. Fue algo muy bonito.

Por otro lado, lunes y miércoles se trató de trabajar en el enmarcado de la obra que llevé y en planear su embalado. Además, en toda la semana tenía las tardes libres ya que los cursos y el evento de clausura sucedieron en la mañana, así que podía seguir trabajando. Una vez más conté con la ayuda del maestro carpintero Pedro Patiño Cruz, quien me ayudó el año pasado en el enmarcado de las primeras piezas. Para esta ocasión tuvimos que planear las cosas por adelantado, tratando de anticipar cada detalle, ya que iba a estar sólo seis días en Oaxaca, y tenía que dejar instrucciones precisas sobre cómo quería que fuera el trabajo. Al final él completo el enmarcado dos semanas después conforme a lo previsto.

Una vez que terminó la semana regresé a la ciudad de México y tres días después fui a Puebla a dejar una obra que había sido seleccionada para la 15ta bienal Ibero Puebla de arte contemporáneo, la cual también pertenece a esta serie de polípticos.

Ahora estoy trabajando en el último políptico de la serie, al final no fueron cinco o seis, sino cuatro -de hecho, uno de ellos es un “bipolíptico”-, no hay más que explorar por esta vía. Para finales de septiembre o principios de octubre este proyecto estará oficialmente terminado. Lo que seguirá después es buscar su exposición y venta. Deséenme suerte.

El arte como hobbie es completamente diferente del arte como profesión. Mientras que en el primero haces las cosas por gusto y sin presión, como un escape a la rutina, en el segundo la actividad creativa es la rutina, la estructura y organización envuelve al proceso, todo se convierte en un objetivo. Muchas veces el artista profesional tiene que traslapar varias tareas a la vez, organizarse cada semana, cada mes y/o cada año; intercalamos compromisos personales y profesionales de distinta naturaleza que buscan crear un tejido laboral que nos permita trabajar de manera regular. Desde hace tres años he encontrado mis temas y mis medios de trabajo; sin embargo, aún no he consolidado otras cosas que me permitan alcanzar un nuevo nivel en mi carrera. En esta segunda mitad del año espero comenzar a construir esa nueva etapa que me permita seguir avanzando. Por mientras estas extensiones y expansiones casi han terminado.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT: EXTENSIONS AND EXPANSIONS 2

From August 4th to 9th, I was in Oaxaca teaching a workshop at Pimpollo, a community center located on the outskirts of the city, as part of the Pocoapoco cultural project, for which I had the pleasure of participating in their 2023 residency. I also took advantage of my stay to continue my polyptych project, which I've been developing for a few months.

Before the trip, I had almost finished one work, but I needed to finish another one that I was going to take back to Oaxaca to be framed. My intention was to submit it to a call I was interested in, where I believed my work could be selected.

The result was a tour de force in which I painted ten paintings in five days, whereas last year, using the same frame size, I painted one per day (note: I'm talking about execution time, not pre-production and development). In the end, I was mentally exhausted from the pressure and all the preparations for the trip. Sometimes you have to be patient, although I have to say that those conditions could have been different if I had managed my work time better. Before traveling to Mérida, I had enough time to start that project, but I didn't. It was a no-brainer.

Anyway, on Sunday, August 3rd, I traveled and arrived in Oaxaca the next day. It was a very busy week. Tuesday and Thursday were the days when I taught a workshop to two groups of children about their life stories. To do this, they had to decorate a cardboard box with things related to their tastes and hobbies. Overall, the project went well; it taught me a lesson about the complexity of working with children. In addition to the aforementioned days, there was a closing ceremony on Friday where we showed the results of the workshops and received recognition. It was a very nice experience.

On the other hand, Monday and Wednesday were dedicated to framing the work I brought and planning its packaging. Plus, I had the afternoons free throughout the week since the courses and the closing event took place in the morning, so I could continue working. Once again, I enlisted the help of master carpenter Pedro Patiño Cruz, who had helped me last year with the framing of the first pieces. This time, we had to plan things in advance, trying to anticipate every detail, since I would only be in Oaxaca for six days and had to leave precise instructions on how I wanted the work to be done. In the end, he completed the framing two weeks later, as planned.

Once the week was over, I returned to Mexico City, and three days later, I went to Puebla to deliver the work that had been selected for the 15th Ibero-Puebla Biennial of Contemporary Art, which also belongs to this series of polyptychs.

I'm now working on the last polyptych in the series. In the end, there weren't five or six, but four—in fact, one of them is a "bipolyptych"—there's nothing more to explore along these lines. By the end of September or early October, this project will be officially finished. What follows next is seeking its exhibition and sale. Wish me luck.

Art as a hobby is completely different from art as a profession. While in the former, you do things for pleasure and without pressure, as an escape from routine, in the latter, the creative activity is the routine, structure and organization surround the process, and everything becomes a goal. Professional artists often have to juggle several tasks at once, organizing themselves each week, each month, and/or each year. We intersperse personal and professional commitments of different kinds that seek to create a work fabric that allows us to work regularly. For the past three years, I've found my themes and my means of work; however, I haven't yet consolidated other things that would allow me to reach a new level in my career. In this second half of the year, I hope to begin building that new stage that will allow me to continue moving forward.
